List of five cricketers who played and coached the same IPL team

Below is the list of top five cricketers who have played and coached the same IPL team. Do note that the below-mentioned are some of the legendary cricket players who have been given immense respect and encouragement by the franchises owing to their skill, expertise, and achievement besides their retirement. So, let’s dive in for more!

Stephen Fleming (Chennai Super Kings)

Stephen Fleming offered his services during the inaugural season of the IPL. The southpaw played ten matches scoring 196 runs at a strike-rate of 118.79 and played the last match of his IPL career against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the year 2009.

It was during this edition that he was appointed as the coach of the team and Fleming retired as the player. The franchise till then did not take the help of any other coach. They were only stuck to the same captain (MS Dhoni) and the coach over all these years. However, the Dhoni-Fleming combination was extremely fruitful and this has indeed brought great momentum to the team. They won three trophies and were considered the second successful team in the league.

Later on, things did turn topsy-turvy as the team was banned for two years i.e., in the year 2016 and 2017 respectively. After which CSK decided to retain Fleming as the head coach and they gloriously won the 2018 edition with the best betting odds.

Ricky Pointing (Mumbai Indians)

The IPL career of Pointing was truly noteworthy. He featured for two franchises, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI), in the tournament but only played 10 matches with a mere 91 runs at a strike-rate of 71.9. This clearly shows that he really struggled hard to score runs in the shortest format of the game.

Nevertheless, the MI team management ensured that they made the utmost use of his smart cricketing mind. The franchise appointed Pointing as the head coach of the team in the 2015 season. Pointing proved his caliber and MI won its second title in three years under Rohit Sharma‘s leadership.

Daniel Vettori (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Daniel Vettori featured for the Delhi Daredevils and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL. RCB picked him in the team in the year 2011 and he played for them until the end of 2012 season. Vettori was made the captain before Virat Kohli was given the captaincy in the 2013 edition.

Later, RCB made Daniel Vettori the head coach in 2014 and he continued to do the job until the 2018 season.

Jacques Kallis (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Jacques Kallis went on to play 98 matches in the IPL while featuring for the RCB and KKR proved all the critics wrong. He shook the crowd by scoring 2427 as many 12 17 half-centuries in the Indian T20 league. Further, he also scalped 65 wickets before ending his IPL career by winning the tournament in 2014.

After the 2015 season, Kallis was made the head coach of the team after Trevor Bayliss was appointed the head coach of England who had crashed out of the World Cup in Australia. However, the team couldn’t perform its best in further editions.

Brendon McCullum (Kolkata Knight Riders)

McCullum played 109 matches in the league by scoring 2880 runs with the help of 13 half-centuries and a couple of tons to his name. His strike-rate which was close to 132 proves his consistency in batting.

The KKR team later approached McCullum after Kallis withdrew last year and he was then made the head coach of the team for the 2020 season. The team fared really well at the auction as well in the upcoming edition.
