On November 10, cricket fans in India and all across the globe had to bid farewell to the 13th edition of the IPL that took place under far from normal circumstances. In order to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, IPL 2020 was organized in a bio-secure environment in empty stadiums in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. While fans missed being the part of the T20 extravaganza, just being able to watch the players in action made up for it.
In the grand finale between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC), MI lifted their fifth trophy by defeating DC by 5 wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This is their second win on a trot and the defending champions again continued to maintain their legacy in the league.
After winning the toss, DC skipper Shreyas Iyer elected to bat first. With the bat, defending champions had a great start as Trent Boult eliminated the threat of Marcus Stoinis on the very first ball. The New Zealand seamer returned in the third over to take his second wicket and Ajinkya Rahane returned to the pavilion after scoring just two runs.
Then Jayant Yadav went on to take the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan, who was at 15 off 13 balls. As a result, Delhi was at the risk of being blown away in their first ever IPL final. However, skipper Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant collected a 96-run stand to shift the winning momentum on their side.
After spending a considerable amount of time with the bat on the field, the two batsmen were about to explode in the last few overs. But the bowling of Nathan Coulter-Nile gave a much-needed breakthrough to MI by smashing the wicket of Rishabh Pant, who scored 56 runs off 38 balls.
The wicket of Pant cost DC dearly as they could amass just 38 runs in the last five overs while losing three wickets. Thus, the Capitals posted a total of 156 on the board. With 65 runs of 50 balls, Iyer emerged as the highest run-getter for DC.
In response, MI had a fierce start as the opening duo Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma started hitting high from the very first over. The two went on to score 45 runs but Stoinis gave first blow to MI by taking the wicket of de Kock. However, this didn’t stop the flow of runs for Mumbai.
Though the Capitals tried to secure their win by taking wickets in the second-half of the innings, it was too late as MI easily chased down the target of 157. Rohit’s amazing knock of 68 runs off 51 balls and Ishan Kishan’s 33 off 19 balls played an important role in MI’s win.
How did the internet react?
Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and IPL 2020 are some of the top trends on twitter as IPL fans celebrated the win with memes on the social media platform. Some ardent fans of MI used Elon Musk’s hilarious smile, and films stills from Dangal and Mohabbatein to convey their message to the Capitals. Meanwhile, others were seen more interested in projecting CSK fans’ reaction to the win.
